Our vision

We have set ourselves the goal of developing a modern economic Master’s study program that optimally prepares our students for the challenges of a rapidly changing professional world. Our focus is always on the future in order to cover the relevant competences with the selection of our courses. A clear philosophy about the content of our courses forms the basis for our course of studies. These are related closely with our goal-driven structure to ensure excellent studying conditions. Nevertheless, our Master’s programme offers all students enough freedom to individually design their studies.

Clear Philosophy

Business Analytics and Operations Research offers a career-oriented study program that allows students to apply quantitative methods on the basis of current case studies.

Target-oriented Structure

Our course of studies forms an extensive methodical basis, which helps our students to continuously expand their specialist knowledge. Contents are redundancy-free and coordinated across courses.

Space for Individuality

The Master's programme offers sufficient scope in the selection of courses, organizing a semester abroad or accomplishing internships. This allows students to tailor their studies to their individual needs.

Start anytime

Our program is structured in such a way that you can start your studies in the summer as well as in the winter semester without any problems. This way you won't lose any time.

Dear prospective students,
As course coordinator, I am responsible for the organisation and orientation of our BA&OR Master’s programme. In doing so, I pay particular attention to our study conditions. Together with my colleagues and our staff, we are constantly working on improving our degree programme and adapting its content to the requirements of our students and the business world.
I would be delighted to welcome you soon as one of our students at our faculty.

Prof. Dr. Heinrich Kuhn
Dean & Course Coordinator BA&OR

The target group of the study program are students who, in addition to their interest in business management, have a strong preference for quantitative, analytical and information-processing methods. We focus on Bachelor graduates in Business Administration or Economics, Business Informatics, Industrial Engineering and Management, Business Mathematics as well as graduates of comparable courses of studies.

Structure and content of the study program

A total of 120 ECTS must be completed in the course of study. These are divided into mandatory, compulsory elective and elective modules as well as the Master’s thesis. The modules can be assigned to the method or subject area.

Six mandatory modules provide the interdisciplinary basis. These include a compulsory module in ethics. In addition, students have to choose compulsory elective modules of the professional discipline of Business Analytics and Operations Research, which account for 35 ECTS credits in total. In addition, five elective modules (25 ECTS credits) from all WFI-master specializations or from a semester abroad can be chosen freely. As students are at liberty to choose from the subject areas in more than two thirds of their modules, they can build an individualized study program adjusted to their own interests.

The six mandatory modules teach the interdisciplinary basis. Irrespective of the intended specialisation, these lay the foundation for a profound quantitative business management education. In addition to the five modules on quantitative methods, an ethics module must be chosen.

  • Decision Science
  • Operations Research
  • Service Analytics
  • Statistical Forecasting Methods
  • Stochastic Models
  • Ethics

Students need to earn 35 ECTS of compulsory elective modules. The courses can either be methodological or aim to apply learned methods. You will find a selection of the applicable method courses, subdivided into the tracks “Business Analytics” or “Operations Research”. You will find a selection of the courses from specialised filed of studies subdivided according to the specialisations “Supply Chain Management”, “Finance”, “Digitalisation and Information Systems” and “Marketing”.

A total of 25 ECTS elective modules must be completed. These can be freely chosen from all modules of the discipline of Business Analytics and Operations Research or from the all other Master specialisations (MARKT, FACT, International Business Administration) of at WFI. Other modules (from abroad or from the entire KU program) can also be submitted on request.
However, the elective area can also be used to deepen one’s knowledge in a completely different field of business administration, economics, in a business language or in a legal subject, or to devote oneself to general, scientific questions.

The Master’s thesis (30 ECTS) must be completed at a chair that regularly offers courses on a subject in the study area “Business Analytics & Operations Research”. However, it is also possible to write the Master’s thesis at a chair that is not involved in the specialization. The prerequisite is, however, that the thesis is done in cooperation with a BA&OR chair.

We support students who wish to write their Master’s thesis in cooperation with companies.

Regularly participating chairs are:

In addition to the structure of the program and the examination requirements with regard to the distribution of ECTS, the conceptual structure and content of the program are also important. On the one hand, the study course provides methods that can be assigned to the track “Business Analytics” or the track “Operations Research”, on the other hand, students gain knowledge in different subject areas. The methods learned are used in the subject areas and are further developed according to the requirements of the department.
The program allows students to apply their knowledge and competences in internships, while studying abroad, in the diverse student organizations and, finally, during the Master’s thesis.

The teaching of modern quantitative methods allows you to solve business management problems adequately. We offer you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in one of the two tracks “Business Analytics” or “Operations Research”. However, you are also free to combine the modules of the tracks.

The solution of numerous business management problems nowadays requires not only the recognition of the cause of the problem and the elaboration of a solution, but increasingly also the implementation in an existing or new business management application system. For this you need knowledge about modern methods from quantitative business administration, operations research, statistics and above all business informatics. The integrative component is characteristic of the study program, i.e. the methods are taught with a strong reference to the business applications.

Business Analytics

Statistical and quantitative methods form the basis for optimal decision models in business administration. Statistical methods can be used to analyse, model, forecast and evaluate quantifiable processes and performances of a company. Accordingly, there is a broad application of the methods in business functional areas such as logistics, marketing, controlling and human resources.

Operations Research

In the track "Operations Research" students learn the development and application of quantitative models and methods in order to support decisions in companies. Typical approaches of Operations Research are optimization and simulation. An abstract model is created for a part of reality, with the help of which analyses can be carried out in order to create a good basis for decisions.

Area of Studies

All areas link taught methods with concrete questions.

Area of Studies

Different areas of studies teach students to solve business problems without having to explicitly explain the methodological basics. You can focus on one or more areas of business administration. We offer “Supply Chain Management”, “Finance”, “Digitalization and Information Systems” and “Marketing”.

Supply Chain Management

For decision support in Supply Chain Management, so-called advanced planning systems are used, in which different quantitative methods of business administration are addressed. In the SCM department, students get to know these quantitative methods and learn how they can be used to solve the respective problems.

The main focus is on financial models and methods for solving problems that typically arise in banks or financial service providers.

Digitalisation and Information Systems

In the field of Digitalisation and Information Systems you will learn the theoretical basics of algorithms and data structures as well as of databases, which are the basis of every information system and thus of every form of automated management of business information.

When specializing in Marketing, students focus on classic customer- and value-oriented problems in marketing, while applying model-based and quantitative analyses on the determinants of purchasing behavior.

Area of application

The practical application of the learned knowledge completes the study.
Theoretically learned knowledge always needs to be applied in practice. That is why we offer a wide range of applications with broad opportunities for using what you have learned independently. This can be done, for example, through an application-oriented master’s thesis, internships and part-time jobs, a semester abroad or through actively participating in a student organization.

Area of Application

Master Thesis

Usually, it is always possible to write the Master thesis in cooperation with a company. Topics that you contribute yourself due to experiences with previous internships are also welcome.

Cooperations with leading companies in a wide range of economic sectors offer excellent prospects for internships and entry-level career opportunities in Germany and abroad. In addition, our university career fair "Company Day" and many other recruiting events as well as company presentations and workshops offer excellent networking opportunities.

Studying Abroad

We offer a wide range of renowned partner universities. WFI students have access to a unique network of more than 90 partner universities for their semester abroad.

Student Organisations

However, studying at the WFI should not be limited to pure learning. Most students are involved in various student organisations. Thus, they continuously boost their soft skills and exchange ideas with students of other faculties. The "WFI Spirit" stands for outstanding commitment.

Ideally prepared for an upscale professional or managerial career.

The competences gained in the study program open up a whole range of career opportunities.

The study program concentrates on quantitative and information processing approaches in order to solve current and complex business management problems in industrial, commercial and service companies. In addition to these classic industries, our graduates are also well prepared for entry positions in renowned management consultancies or further research work as part of a doctorate.

Data Analyst

Many companies talk about data as the most valuable resource of the current information age. However, the enormous amount of data must first be made available. The Data Analyst is absolutely essential for the systematic collection, processing and evaluation of all types of data.

OR Analyst

With OR you learn how to make optimal decisions. The OR Analyst uses mathematical models and procedures to help companies solve complex business problems. These range from decision theory and mathematical optimization to statistics and game theory.

With their methodological knowledge and analytical approach, graduates of this program are well prepared to start their career as all-rounder in renowned strategy consultancies. By focusing on one subject area, however, a career as a specialist in niche consulting is also an option.

The study focus provides all the necessary basics for further research work and creates ideal conditions for a successful consecutive doctoral study in one of the covered subject areas.

What our alumni say about their studies...
